Democratic primary.
11/6/01 Associated
Press: "A New Era in City Government"
A Taiwan-born immigrant made political history Tuesday,
becoming the first Asian-American to win a major elective office in the city.
John C. Liu, 34, a Democrat from Queens, won a City Council
seat and the opportunity to become, he said, "a direct voice for
Asian-Americans at City Hall."
"We made history tonight," Liu declared in his
victory speech. "We are in a new era, where all the people of New York City
will finally have equal representation."
Liu immigrated to Queens at the age of 5, attended public
schools, and studied physics at the State University of New York in Binghamton.
"I do realize that I am breaking a barrier," Liu
said on Election Day, while shaking hands with voters outside a Flushing polling
station. "There will be very high expectations, a lot of
responsibilities to fulfill, and I'm ready for it."
He concentrated on appealing to all voters during his
campaign. "There is no Puerto Rican or Chinese or Italian way to pick up
the garbage or pick up the snow," Liu said in his victory speech. "The
issues facing this district affect us all, and we will solve these issues
together."
Liu works as a manager at PricewaterhouseCoopers LLP and is
married. His
first child, he noted with pride, was celebrating his first birthday on Election
Day.
