Al Gore Response to 80/20 Initiative America is strong because of its diversity, not in spite of it. That is why I am proud to support the goals of the 80/20 declaration, and call upon all levels of business, academia and government to open wide the doors of opportunity to Asian Americans and to all Americans. In the last seven years, our Administration has tripled the number of Asian Pacific Americans appointed by the previous Administration, and has nominated more Asian Pacific Americans to the Federal bench than any other Administration. And for the first time in history, our Administration has created an Advisory Commission on Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders to improve participation in Federal programs where communities may be under- served. I am committed to diversity in leadership positions and will continue to advance leadership opportunities for Asian Pacific Americans. I have been a strong supporter of affirmative action programs that work well for minorities and women. As Vice President, I denounced efforts such as Proposition 209 in California and Initiative 200 in Washington State that attempted to wantonly eliminate these programs. And I demonstrated my commitment to civil rights by my unwavering support for the full confirmation of Bill Lann Lee as the Assistant Attorney General for Civil Rights at the Department of Justice. If you entrust me with the presidency, I would direct my cabinet officers to investigate discrimination against Asian Pacific Americans in any environment, and to use every means available to combat discrimination where it is found. A Gore Administration would work to lift the "glass ceiling" that unfairly prevents any American from rising to his or her fullest potential. And I would continue the progress that we have made to create an Administration that looks like America - considering and appointing qualified Asian Pacific Americans for positions at every level of government. The story of America is one of expanding the circle of human and civil rights, prosperity and dignity to all Americans. As we move into the 21st century, it is important to recognize the contributions of those who have helped to assure that America enters the new millennium as a leader. The unique talents and abilities of Americans of Asian ancestry have enriched every sector of American life including education, the arts, health care, business, and science and technology. Asian Pacific Americans provide our country with key leadership and vision in the areas of civil rights, community service, and public policy. You have made our nation stronger, more diverse and more inclusive. As president, I will continue working to empower your community. (Signed) Al Gore |
