Governor Bush Announces Hawaii Leadership

August 4, 1999, Austin

Texas Governor George W. Bush announced today that Hawaii State House Republican Leader Barbara Marumoto will serve as Chairman for his presidential campaign in Hawaii. Gov. Bush also named Senator Hiram L. Fong and Patricia Saiki as state Honorary Co-Chairmen, and Howard K.O. Chong, Jr. state Finance Chairman.

"I joined the Bush team because I am truly impressed by Governor
Bushs record of giving people back their own hard-earned money and
control of their schools," said Marumoto. "We need those kinds of ideas here to encourage more jobs and better opportunities for Hawaiis families. I am honored to serve on Governor Bushs campaign."

"I believe that Gov. Bush is the leader who will restore respect and
honesty to the office of the Presidency," said Fong. "We want
someone who makes us proud of our country and brings a clear vision to leadership. He is also a proven leader who unites people behind
common goals. Governor Bush is the one who can do the job."

"Im happy to serve as Honorary Co-Chairman for Governor Bushs
presidential effort in Hawaii," said Saiki. "As a former administrator of
the U.S. Small Business Administration under President George Bush,
I know that Governor Bush has the qualifications needed to keep the engine of our economysmall businessrunning smoothly. He has
done it for Texas, and he can do it for Hawaii as our President in the
new millennium."

"Im pleased Barbara has agreed to lead my campaign in Hawaii, along
with Senator Fong and Representative Saiki," said Gov. Bush. "They
are able, dedicated and experienced leaders. I feel fortunate to have
their advice and support as we move forward in the Aloha State."

Others serving on the committee are Republican State Representatives
Emily Auwae, Bertha Leong, Galen Fox, Mark Moses and Jim Rath, Kauai Mayor Maryanne Kusaka, former state Senators Fred Rohlfing
and Mike Liu, Honolulu City Councilmember John Henry Felix, former Maui Councilmember Alan Arakawa, and as volunteer counsel to the
Bush campaign in Hawaii, Randal S. Yoshida.

Marumoto was elected as a delegate to Hawaiis 1978 Constitutional
Convention, and then to the state House of Representatives, where she has served for 21 years. She is married to Richard A. Coons, a retired partner in charge of the Honolulu office of Deloitte and Touche.  Although U.S. citizens, Marumoto and her parents were interned with
other Japanese families at Tanforan Race Track just south of San Francisco at the onset of World War II.

Fong served from 1960 to 1977 in the United States Senate, the first
Asian American ever to hold that office. He is the co-founder of Finance Factors, a Hawaii financial service company, and owner of Senator Fongs Plantations and Gardens, a botanical garden and visitor destination on the windward side of Oahu.

Saiki served from 1986 to 1990 in the United States House of Representatives, was appointed by President George Bush to head the
U.S. Small Business Administration in 1991, and was Hawaiis Republican candidate for U.S. Senator in 1990 and Governor in 1994.

Chong is President and Chief Executive Officer of Healani Land Company Incorporated. He is also the Republican National Committeeman for Hawaii and served as Republican State Chairman for Hawaii under Presidents Ronald Reagan and George Bush.

serve on the statewide Board of Education and was Executive Director of the Honolulu Liquor Commission. He ran for Honolulu Prosecutor in
1996.
