ASIAN-AMERICANS ARRESTED IN NEW YORK
On or about April 3, 2000, six Chinatown community members and activists were arrested at
a town hall meeting, hosted by Mayor Rudolph
Giuliani.
The town hall meeting was held at PS 130 (the De Soto School) in Chinatown, and began at
8pm.
The arrests were apparently sparked after a participant in the town hall meeting requested
Chinese translation -- something that should be standard for meetings within Chinese
communities.
In response, Mayor Giuliani joked, "How about German", belittling the request
for translation. Town hall meeting attendees objected to the insensitivity.
Officers removed six of the meeting attendees, separating them from the meeting in a
cafeteria. The six were later arrested, and were brought to the 5th Precinct in Manhattan,
in spite of over 50 protesters
chanting "let them go".
A Chinatown street vendor, a high school student and People's Justice 2000 members were
among the arrestees.
Over 30 community residents and others protested their arrests outside of the 5th
precinct.
